Women’s safety is not something to take lightly. There are a lot of dangers that face women when walking through city streets. That’s why most of the time, many women are reluctant to travel alone. Fortunately, there are still a few places that are safe for lone female travelers.
Recently, Provident Personal Credit conducted a survey to determine the safest cities in the UK based on the politeness, trust, and happiness of the residents plus the level of upkeep observed.
The survey interviewed more than 2,700 Britons to determine which cities are the safest to live in. It’s safe to assume that these top 10 cities are also good for a female who travels alone in the country.
#10 – Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the second most highly populated Scottish cities, and yet, it still made it to the top 10 list. According to the survey, the Scottish capital scored a 7.45. Majority of the residents say that they feel very safe in their city. In fact, they highly recommend living here, even just for one day.
#9. Gloucester
Gloucester, a city in the Western part of England, ranked number 9 on the list. Residents from Gloucester rated the city with a 7.49. They are very happy living on this side of the UK. Every since day one, Gloucester has maintained its position in all of the categories. The city also received the highest rating for politeness and trust.
#8. Glasgow
Glasgow also received a 7.49 rating from its residents. It’s best known for its high happiness and safety level. It has faired better compared to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. It’s generally safe for women to walk around many parts of the city during the day. However, it may not be as safe during the night. You may need to practice some personal security awareness techniques to keep yourself safe or hire a bodyguard to escort you to your travel destinations. #7. Plymouth
Plymouth is a vibrant city where you can enjoy plenty of nightlife options. In the survey, Plymouth scored a 7.59. They are known for their strong sense of community. Locals work hand in hand with the police to keep the town safe. It’s a nice city to visit most especially if you like marveling at coastal lines. It is also home to plenty of beautiful tourist spots such as the National Marine Aquarium.
#6. Aberdeen
Another Scottish city made it to the top 10 safest cities in the British soil. Since the previous survey, Aberdeen has dropped from the top ranking. Nevertheless, it’s still one of the most interesting places you can travel to most especially if you are a female. It’s home to the Duthie Park, Hazlehead Park, and St. Machar’s Cathedral.
#5. Worcester

According to the survey, Worcester is the 5th safest city in the entire UK. It scored 7.84 points thanks to resident’s politeness, friendliness, and welcoming nature. If you’re headed to this side of the country, don’t forget to visit the Worcester Cathedral, Woods Country Park and Gheluvelt Park.
#4. York
York is one of the most historical cities in Great Britain. It scored a 7.89 in the survey. Also, according to the latest statistics, York has a lower crime rate as compared to other cities in the UK. Needless to say, it’s a safe place for you to visit when you’re a lone traveler in the country.
#3. Belfast
Belfast received a high score of 7.95. It received stellar ratings for all the categories. It also scored high for gossip and entertainment. Feel free to check out the Belfast Zoological Gardens, Exploris Aquarium, and Mount Stewart.
#2. Wrexham
Wrexham scored an 8.07. According to its residents, Wrexham is a beautiful city, especially for travelers. You can head to Erddig, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Acton Park to look back at the rich history of the city.
#1. Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth garnered an amazing 8.68 score from the survey for its best upkeep. Aberystwyth is the best place if you want to look at ancient ruins. You can visit the Aberystwyth Castle or the get a train ride at the Vale of Rheidol. It’s a safe city where you can stroll around without worrying too much about thieves, pick-pocketer, and catcallers.
